Energy marketing in Nigeria

Vektron Merchants finds power producers, distributors and energy projects in Nigeria for foreign companies that want to supply or invest there. We confirm the first meetings and plan the visit.

What does energy marketing in Nigeria involve?

Nigeria's power market is splitting between federal and state control. Under the Electricity Act 2023, 15 states had taken over regulation of their own markets by February 2026, Lagos among them. Energy marketing in Nigeria means finding the producers, distributors and large users that fit the client's plans and reaching the people who sign.

Who are the main counterparties in Nigeria's energy sector?

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) regulates the national market, and state regulators take over within their borders. Privately owned generation and distribution companies sell into the market. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) owns the grid, and system operation is moving to an independent system operator under the 2023 Act. Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET) holds older power purchase contracts. The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) backs mini-grids and off-grid power.

What a foreign company needs to prepare in Nigeria

The client should confirm whether its project falls under NERC or a state regulator before it negotiates. Buyers' payment records vary widely, and power contracts often carry naira currency risk. A foreign-owned company must incorporate with the Corporate Affairs Commission and then file with the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission before it starts business.

What Vektron does, and what the client keeps

We build a list of producers, distributors and large users that fit the client's offering and check each against public records and sanctions lists. Our staff reach the decision makers, confirm meetings in Lagos or Abuja, prepare the visit plan and introduce local advisers. Licences, power purchase terms, legal advice, negotiation, contracts and payments stay with the client.
