Energy marketing in the DRC

Vektron Merchants finds power producers, utilities and energy projects in the DRC for foreign companies that want to supply or invest there. We confirm the first meetings and plan the visit.

What does energy marketing in the DRC involve?

The 2014 Electricity Law ended the state utility's monopoly and opened generation, transmission, distribution and sales to private operators, including mini-grids. Energy marketing in the DRC means finding the producers, utilities and large users that fit the client's plans and reaching the people who decide.

Who are the main counterparties in the DRC's energy sector?

SNEL is the state utility and runs the Inga hydro stations on the Congo River. The electricity regulator, ARE, began operating in 2020 and reviews licence and concession applications. ANSER promotes and finances electrification in rural and peri-urban areas. The Ministry of Energy and Hydraulic Resources sets policy. Private hydro, solar and mini-grid developers and the mines make up the rest.

What a foreign company needs to prepare in the DRC

Concessions and licences pass through ARE, with decisions taken by the ministry or a provincial governor depending on the project. Business is done in French. Sanctions screening is essential, because people and companies in the country are on several sanctions lists.

What Vektron does, and what the client keeps

We build a list of producers, utilities and large users that fit the client's offering and check each against public records and sanctions lists. Our staff reach the decision makers in English and French, confirm meetings in Kinshasa or Lubumbashi, prepare the visit plan and introduce local advisers. Licences, concessions, power purchase terms, legal advice, negotiation and contracts stay with the client.
